There is no doubt that production performance of multi-fractured horizontal wells depends on design of the clusters and their effectiveness assuming reservoir and geology are of decent quality. Even though there is still much debate in the industry about how to design clusters, there are physics-based approaches that we can use to improve desired results.

The talk will focus on the technical foundations and the different effects to which the clusters are subjected to achieve a balanced design with focus on the productivity of the stage and ultimately overall well productivity. 

Then some definitions of cluster effectiveness will be analyzed in order to assess the designs outcomes and some technologies to enhance base cases will be introduced to be able to continue adjusting and optimizing the designs. 

Finally, there will be an overview of certain technologies available to evaluate the results obtained with their most important pros and cons, which closes the cycle of continuous improvement of designing, executing, evaluating and optimizing.


Mr. Jorge Ponce is currently Completion and Stimulation Principal Advisor at JEP Consulting. He earned a degree in Chemical Engineering and a post degree in Project Management, both from universities in Argentina. 

With more than 28 years of experience, he previously worked for Wintershall, Apache, BP, Pan American Energy, Amoco and BJ Services in different positions. 

With a strong background and experience in Completions and Stimulations, he has worked in other disciplines including drilling, cementing, production and well testing which allows him to integrate multiple disciplines for wells or field evaluations. 

While working for BP in US, he wrote the completion and stimulation handbook for unconventional reservoirs. He has authored or coauthored several technical papers in national and international publications and in addition he is an active participant in industry tech-related events. 

In 2013 he received the SPE South America and Caribbean Region award in Completions Optimization and Production. 

In 2017 he was professor of the Integration Project subject for the postgraduate degree in Non-Conventional Reservoirs at ITBA.

At the end of 2018 he wrote “The Technologies that Conquered Unconventional Reservoirs” and recently he wrote and freely distribute an English-to-Spanish dictionary focused in the oil and gas industry which is in the process of being updated.

Recently he has been involved in teaching completion and stimulation courses in conventional and unconventional reservoirs for international clients.
